Profile
Tony has integrated his personal background, academic talents and interests in a way that will open doors to several similar career pathways. He hopes to study global affairs in China or do research on trade policy at the Council on Foreign Relations. Law school is another option.
Wherever he first lands after graduation he will continue his work on trade policy. In addition to his double major in political science/international relations and economics, Tony is pursuing a minor in Chinese studies and is fluent in Mandarin. He applies strong quantitative skills to his research, such as his internship with the Council on Foreign Relations, where he helped manage and organize data for a book project focused on the shift toward protectionism In the U.S. At the same time, he participated in the Research Apprenticeship Program, investigating tariff policy.
On-campus activities include serving as director of external affairs for Kappa Alpha Pi Pre-Law Fraternity, and writing for the Prospect Journal of International Affairs. He has earned admittance to the Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society for political science majors. Tony is enrolled in Roger Revelle College.
On the political side, he worked for the California State Assembly, primarily handling constituent casework and organizing community events. He also volunteered as a canvasser for the Arizona Democratic Party during the last general election cycle.
Tony came to the U.S. at age six, and as a first-generation American he often reflects on his grandfather, “who endured unspeakable suffering at the hands of a ruthless Chinese Communist Party regime” as well as on his father, “who sacrificed all that he knew to boldly venture to the other side of the world.” To Tony, the words “first” and “generation” are about the “lived experiences and countless sacrifices of those who bear the label and those who came before them that give it its meaning.”
