Jacob Ortiz

Jacob’s passion for science is grounded in the wonders of the universe and what lies beyond our current level of understanding. His goal is to do research in the field of astrophysics, and his dream job would be to work at NASA. He hopes to further “humanity’s understanding of the universe we all share.” He also believes that “science has the ability to transcend human language and division, and to humble us through each new breakthrough.”

He is grateful for the opportunity to work in the Duarte Research Lab on campus. This lab works with AI models in high energy physics and “ to ensure these models align with the fundamental laws of our universe.” He believes that this research is in the “cross section of physics and machine learning.”

He is also employed by the Physics Department evaluating and grading student assignments and works as a volunteer tutor in math and physics. Previously he worked with UC San Diego Housing, Dining and Hospitality at the Pines and Roots Restaurant. In his hometown of Bakersfield he earned the Jack Brigham Civic Virtue Award, given to an individual committed to “leadership, civic engagement, and community service.”

Jacob has several interests beyond science, and appreciates how they all invoke “curiosity, passion and human connection.” One is language. He has taught himself Arabic, which has opened doors to new friendships and perspectives. He also enjoys expressing himself by playing the piano and guitar and meeting other music lovers. His love of photography has opened another path beyond science to appreciate the beauty of the universe. He sees it as “a way to invoke curiosity and connection through each and every fleeting moment.”

His experiences at UC San Diego have enhanced his “ability to connect with people through science and language.” Jacob is enrolled in John Muir College.
