Skye Audelo

In pursuit of a career in criminal justice Skye has found ways to gain hands-on experience since high school. She volunteered with the Tustin Police Explorers where she supported police staff during public outreach events. She also engaged in training activities such as first aid, emergency response, and communication protocols. Until recently Skye was employed as a community service officer with the Chula Vista Police Department. Currently she is with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office as a Detentions Cadet.

To keep things interesting, Skye is also working at the Navy Marine Mammal Facility. This does relate to her cognitive science major, because she helps set up equipment for dolphin cognition studies and helps inventory video sessions. At UC San Diego she participates in peer mentoring.

Skye has found both her time at UC San Diego and her police work to be opportunities for personal growth. Working with the public in law enforcement has allowed her “to establish a stronger command presence and communication skills.” She had to take charge of her life at a young age and has come to appreciate that “growth comes from beating adversity.” She knows that law enforcement requires both mental toughness and physical stamina, and she is very much focused on both. She believes that “the decisions I have made and the life I’ve created will be the reason for whatever success I will have.” When she needs a break from the stresses of school and work she enjoys music and drawing.

She not only finds the field of criminal justice personally meaningful but is also determined to serve and protect her community. She is drawn to the “problem-solving component of public service” and is motivated by the prospect of working in a field that promotes continuing growth and learning. Eventually she would like to work in her hometown of Tustin.

Skye is enrolled in Roger Revelle College and has earned the Discover the Law Certificate of Special Recognition.
