Piper Crane

Piper looks forward to a career in medicine, and is so “fascinated with science,” that she has added a minor in chemistry. She is a naturally curious person and looks for opportunities to try new things, whether it’s sky diving, sign language or running. Piper was reluctant at first to join Strides, because she didn’t know any of the other members in the running club, but now finds that it is the perfect way to spend more time outdoors and make new friends. Being in Strides has reminded her of “the importance of a work/life balance.”

Ultimately Piper sees herself doing pediatric psychiatry. She enjoys working with children, and is employed as an assistant teacher with the Jewish Community Early Childhood Center. In that role she organizes the classroom for daily activities and helps prepare meals and snacks. She enjoys working with the children on basic alphabet and numeric skills and helps foster appropriate social skills such as sharing and listening. She also volunteers with Youth Empowerment in Science (YES) where she coordinates the monthly newsletter and social media accounts. Through YES she promotes love of STEM subjects and organizes workshops for elementary school students. She reports that during her time on the executive board of YES as the publicity chair, the organization has “started working with new schools, nearly doubled our social media following, and tripled our event attendance.”

Piper has also volunteered in the emergency department of her local hospital. She “gained exposure to acute patient management” and worked to help the department run more smoothly. She believes that this helped her to remain calm and think clearly under pressure.

She has faced challenges growing up, but this has served as an additional motivation to study psychology and human behavior. She believes that her empathetic nature will help her connect with future patients, and she is “passionate about giving back to the community.” Two grandparents passed away from cancer at an early age, and she has been motivated to be a student they would have been proud of. Piper is enrolled in Seventh College, where her achievements undoubtedly would have made them proud.
