Vica Yu

Vica is one of those talented individuals who excels in both the quantitative and creative domains. In addition to majoring in data science, Vica is also pursuing a minor in Cognitive Science and Mathematics in Sixth College. Machine learning and large language models are also primary areas of interest.

On campus Vica works in the Transportation Office as a Field Services Representative. This entails conducting detailed data analysis and collaborating with team members to “streamline event parking processes, improve customer convenience” and assist in training new student employees.

Off campus Vica is fortunate to work as a Data Analyst and Games Developer with the Qualcomm Institute. This has involved working with team members to create the Dynamic Weather system of a multiplayer climate game.  Vica believes that this effort sharpens one’s “technical skills in using modern databases and programming languages” and also enhances one’s “collaborative and project management abilities.” It is also a way to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems.

Vica is an active member of the Chinese Engineering Society Club, and assists in carrying out club activities, including resume workshops, alumni interviews, and intern mixers, as well as organizing events around career preparation. Vica tutors other students for free in STEM subjects, and more formally works in the UC San Diego Office for Students with Disabilities as a volunteer notes taker. The objective is to “provide legible course notes for students with disabilities in a clear, concise, and timely manner.”

Ultimately, Vica plans to obtain a Master’s degree in machine learning, and work in a large tech firm to contribute to the development of AI systems that are not only “technologically advanced but also ethically designed and accessible to diverse populations.”
