Abigail Tseng

Abigail is a genuine self starter. She is self-employed as a tutor to youngsters ages eight to seventeen in both English and Math, and “takes a lot of pride in my ability to teach and support them.” She is also a Student Ambassador for Hero Cosmetics; she creates online marketing posts and plans and hosts on-campus events to advertise the brand. This self reliance was modeled by her parents. Her mother came to the U.S. on her own from Taiwan when she was only thirteen years old, and her father emigrated here as a young man after meeting her mother. They are self-employed and according to Abigail, “the most hard-working people I know and the bravest.”

Recently Abigail made a change in her future career plans. She still loves psychology, but has added a minor in Law and Society and intends to take the LSAT in the fall. She loves “debating different verdicts and creating arguments for different sides.” She is enrolled in Thurgood Marshall College. Last year she worked as a Lab Assistant at the Language & Development (LAD) Lab, where she helped organized data for a PhD student.

Abigail has also taken on a leadership role with Alpha Phi Sorority. As chapter vice-president she oversees Health, Wellness, and Accountability. This involves overseeing the chapter’s philanthropic events for the Alpha Phi Foundation in support of women’s heart health. She also coordinates their social events and serves as Public Relations liaison. She believes that this work has not only nurtured her organizational and leadership skills, but “most importantly, has taught me the importance of delegating!”

Juggling strong academics, paid jobs, and volunteer work can lead to burnout, but Abigail is intent on not letting either her work load or financial pressures deprive her of finding balance in her life. Yoga helps both her mental and physical wellness, and she loves to spend time in nature. Her personal goals consist of “staying disciplined, staying grounded, and staying happy.” She believes that her “greatest talent is being open to trying a little bit of everything, but my biggest priorities are my mental and physical well-being along with my family.”
