Profile
Although Jessica is enrolled in Revelle College, she is a Resident Advisor at the new Eighth College. She makes herself available to the more than forty residents on her assigned floor for advice and counseling, whether it involves academics or campus social life. In that role she has “learned the importance of feeling a sense of community.” She has tapped into her creative side to come up with floor themes, flyers, and door name tags to foster a sense of togetherness. This summer she once again is working as an Academic Connections Advisor with the Division of Extended Studies, advising high school students on college readiness and the application process.
Previously, she worked with UC San Diego Alumni Engagement as a Student Storyteller, which involved all aspects of video production. Off campus, she was a substitute dance teacher at the Corona Dance Academy.
Jessica is passionate about dance, and is a key player in the Muir Musical productions. Recently, she choreographed their production of Into the Woods, and has been a cast member in several shows. She has “found a way to combine my love for dance and performance with community building.” Working with dancers from beginning to advanced levels has put “her teaching skills to the test,” but ultimately she was proud of the environment she had fostered.
She also finds time to volunteer in the Emergency Department at UC San Diego Health. She was able to list over twenty different tasks that she could be asked to do, from transporting specimens to laboratories to providing wheelchairs when needed. No matter the job, this work gives her an insider’s perspective on how an ER functions.
Jessica is pleased to have honed her leadership skills during her college years, and she believes that “collaboration and immersion within many fields has provided me with a unique toolset of cultural and social skills…”
She plans to go to medical school and specialize in pediatrics. She also hopes to “make the world a healthier place through improvements to the workplace.” As a mixed race woman, she has a strong passion for creating “a more equitable and accessible work environment that brings joy to those who work there, rather than stress.”
