Sydney successfully juggles academics, paid and volunteer work and extracurricular activities. Even with her demanding schedule, she is positive about having learned during college to improve her time management skills and not neglect her personal well-being. She is enrolled in John Muir College and a member of the Muir Caledonian Honor Society.
Her father inspired her decision to ultimately pursue a career in accounting. As a child she found his work in the financial sector to be something of a mystery. She has early memories of “watching SpongeBob on the TV in his office while CNBC was playing in the background.” She remained curious, however, and during COVID, he “persuaded (and maybe bribed) my sister and me to take a finance course that he created for us so we could learn more about his field.” She now realizes that the course she somewhat begrudgingly took to appease her father ultimately helped her find her career path and apply her love of math.
Sydney worked in the past as a tutor and math instructor, and last summer she was an intern at the Deloitte accounting firm, where she mostly worked with the auditing teams. During the school year she has served as an accounting intern with Tracon Pharmaceuticals. However, this summer she is back at Deloitte.
She enjoys her volunteer work with the San Diego Humane Society, even though she finds working with the public and walking the dogs more fulfilling than cleaning out kennels. She also volunteered with the Barrio Logan College Institute as a math and reading tutor.
Sydney would like to work for a public accounting firm after graduation and sit for the CPA exam once she has the required hours. In choosing where to work she considers how the company “values its employees and clients, as well as supports the community.” Her personal goals include learning about other cultures through travel and surrounding herself with supportive people. She believes that “the most important part of life is human connection, and the memories that you make with the people that you love.”
