Sarai Nerey

Sarai is a first-generation Mexican college student at Revelle College.  She chose to be a History major, because it is at the crossroads of all that she is passionate about: history, art, art history, literature, philosophy and music.  “I am so ecstatic to be in a place of higher education where I am constantly meeting students like myself from all walks of life who are beacons of inspiration and awe.”  Sarai, the eldest daughter of a single mother, took on many responsibilities within her family.  “Leaving my family for UCSD and the chance at achieving a bachelor’s degree was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made.”

Sarai is interested in oral histories and how they can be used in historical research.  She has a special interest in Latin American history and culture, with a focus on the 20th Century, and would love to travel to Latin America to record the oral histories of indigenous groups.  In so doing, she would like to learn how industrial development and urbanization has affected such populations as well as their cultures.

By exposing herself to new opportunities, Sarai has earned the Revelle Provost Honors for multiple quarters.  She has become a volunteer Peer Tutor and is glad to give back, often working with students whose first language is not English.  “I am confident in my ability to teach others how to read and write critically about literature, historical texts and philosophical texts.  I find it rewarding to help them express themselves through writing as we work together.”

Sarai aims to achieve a PhD in History and be a professor, as she wants to do research and uncover new aspects of historical events.  She wants to give back and “the best way to do this would be by returning the favor of teaching.”
