Profile
Nicole is a first-generation college student with a Microbiology major and a Psychology minor at Thurgood Marshall College. She has an interest in medicine, particularly the mental health sector. “Mental health awareness is something I find incredibly important.” Nicole states that “one of the most important projects to me has been being a part of Nurturing Neurons.” It is a neurocognitive remediation program developed by Dr. Grace Mucci and UCLA members of The Global Intern Collaborative that is aimed at helping young students develop tactics to discuss positive ways of handling emotions in a safe space. Nicole finds that being involved “heals her inner child and gives her hope for future generations, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.”
While spending a summer shadowing a physician, Nicole gained insight into what it means to be a doctor, see patients, give exams and perform necessary procedures. It also changed her perspective about the relationship between mental and physical health. She realized how important it is to understand mental health even though it may not be your specialty and how people need more mental health resources.
Nicole’s Armenian father came to America as a refugee from Azerbaijan. Her family has sacrificed much in order to give her opportunities such as attending college. Her family’s financial insecurity and hardships have shaped her into a tough individual who is disciplined in many ways. She would love to travel to Armenia and provide medical care to those who are physically and mentally injured from the border conflict.
Nicole’s goals include going to medical school and pursuing a career in medicine, but she is not yet sure in which specialty. She also wants research to be a part of her future so that she can contribute by researching methods and treatments for illnesses.
