Jeffrey Liu

Jeffrey’s journey dates back to high school where he first learned how to program and started building web applications for competitions.  Now a Computer Science major at Sixth College, he says he found his direction after applying for an undergraduate research program.  “I was able to express my thoughts and individuality, and others respected my ideas and suggestions.  Feeling like I’d made the right decision by joining research, I ran towards it as fast as I could.”  After investing hours in the lab, Jeffrey published a paper within the first year.  He continued to explore other research positions that allowed him to study interesting topics.  Although he had struggled with insecurities in the past, he is proud of himself as he is now able to own his ideas, work and career.

Jeffrey took his first job as a Software Engineer for the IT department at UC San Diego, followed by a research position performing machine learning for low-power IoT devices, (Internet of Things).  He continued to progress and developed his own methodology for detecting compromised construction materials in aircraft to determine their stability.  “Coincidentally, structural health monitoring led me to psychiatry/health research where I would employ computer vision to analyze experimental video data from veterans for diagnosis of brain injuries.”

Jeffrey’s positive research experience convinced him to devote himself to further graduate studies.  He is interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering.  In particular, he’d like to get into the field of healthcare robotics, which is advancing rapidly in areas such as robotic surgery, imaging technology, or even applications as simple as medication reminders.  Bottom line, Jeffrey wants to leave a positive impact on the world by contributing to lifesaving technology.  “In our current world I believe that computer scientists and engineers, me included, have the obligation to develop technologies that will help improve the quality of life of those around us.”
