Biochemistry/Chemistry :: Awarded in honor of Phemie Davis

Katherine Tang

As a pre-med student majoring in Biochemistry/Chemistry with a minor in Psychology at Thurgood Marshall College, Katherine has had a lot of coursework to complete, taking, on average, five classes each quarter. The Provost Honors scholar has also remained active with extracurricular activities as well, including UC San Diego’s M.E.M.O. (Medical, Educational Missions, and Outreach) and WPE (Well-being Peer Educator) programs, volunteering, and working as a lab assistant. “While it may be difficult at times, I think that it is enriching and fulfilling to be doing things that I love. I also love volunteering, especially when it entails tutoring. Since entering college, I have tutored math for low-income students at the Preuss School, English for conflict-affected students in the Middle-East, and biology, chemistry, and stats for the Teaching + Learning Commons at UC San Diego.”

Katherine is also passionate about mental health and has further explored this through her Psychology minor. “To me, mental health is just as important as physical health, and it is essential to overall well-being. As a WPE, I get to educate my peers about the importance of mental wellness and provide tips on how to incorporate it into their daily lives. I think it is important to help people explore different forms of self-care to find what is right for them.”

Becoming a pediatrician is Katherine’s ultimate career goal where she can make a positive impact on people’s lives every single day. “I also want to remain aware of social issues in the world and be able to take part in addressing them with the work that I do. My parents both came to America as refugees from the Vietnam War. They have worked hard to build a nice life for my family, and I am extremely grateful to them for all that they have given me.”
