Jordan Eide

As a first-generation college student, Jordan, Revelle College Mathematics major, considers it a personal achievement to have gotten to the place where she is academically, in the face of her parents’ divorce and having to live below the poverty line with her mother. She excels at UC San Diego where she is a Supplemental Instruction Leader, acting as a resource for students to engage with the material through review, practice, and collaboration with their peers. “Each quarter I am assigned to a new math class where I am required to attend all lectures, weekly trainings with the Supplemental Instruction Coordinator, create session materials (including PowerPoints, session plans, and practice problems), and hold three hours of supplemental instruction sessions per week. I enjoy working with students and find a great deal of pride in being able to help others overcome their difficulty with a topic as complex as mathematics. These experiences have shaped my desire to become a high school-level teacher.”

While she entertains the idea of teaching college-level mathematics, it is the high school level where Jordan feels she will be most effective and happy. “I aspire to teach high school because of the level of connection with students that high school teachers are granted. I want to get to know my students, as this will provide me with the information necessary to teach them in the way that is best suited for them specifically; this is not as commonly feasible at the university level.” It is important to Jordan to have an impact on students’ lives; to teach them something that they may find difficult, like mathematics, and be able to help them improve and possibly learn to love the subject. “My hope is to help them find their way in life at the point in their lives right before they enter into the world as adults.”
