Human Biology :: Minerva Kunzel Scholar

Clara Hess

Combining academics with dance has provided Clara with a memorable college experience at UC San Diego. The Revelle College Provost Honors student is interested in a career in medicine. “I want to work in pediatric medicine, and I am particularly interested in pediatric and adolescent psychiatry.” She also is eager to explore other specialties such as genetics, general practice, or gynecology.

Because of her passion for people, Clara is majoring in Human Biology. “My biggest interest is in learning how humans work from every perspective. My course of study has given me the opportunity to study humans not only on the biological level, as in Human Physiology and Genetics, but also to learn about historical trends and modern perspectives in ethics.”

Following a lifetime of performing arts experience, Clara’s primary non-academic pursuit involves her participation and leadership on the UCSD Dancesport Team, which has included multiple collegiate competitions across the state. She was honored with the Sports Clubs award for Academic Achievement. Also, she spent five summers volunteering and later working for her hometown summer camp. The experience of collaborating with the other camp counselors as well as working with the campers taught her how to manage larger groups.

Knowing that her strongest skill is interpersonal communication, Clara has enjoyed tutoring math at many grade levels. She has helped middle school students understand complicated concepts. “I am particularly proud of the methods to visualize fractions which I created for a particular student, who was able to keep up with her sixth-grade math class thanks to my help.”
