Profile
Alejandro considers himself a Renaissance man. Since he was a child, he has consumed books and knowledge for the sake of learning. Though his journey to UC San Diego was years in the making, Alejandro has maintained a high GPA since taking the leap as a transfer student and is a member of Muir College’s Caledonian Society. Living a life of “service-to-others,” Alejandro desires for a career in the health sciences. As an Argentinian immigrant, he learned empathy from his mother, a practicing physician. He has a passion for language and is also majoring in Linguistics, with an emphasis on Cognition and Language. To balance the intellectual side of things, he is an avid soccer fan, enjoys weightlifting, and indulges in meditation and hiking.
Life as a re-entry student has been a roller-coaster ride for Alejandro. After having matriculated at Brown University in 2010, fresh out of high school, he ended up taking a medical leave of absence in 2012. Despite his best efforts, for the next four years, he struggled to re-enter college due to resurgent health problems. However, during this time, he made it his priority to explore every opportunity available, including volunteering in an immunology lab and working as a foreign language tutor. Once his health was stable, Alejandro withdrew from Brown and began anew at community college. He is confident his experiences helped hone his self-awareness, improved his work ethic and helped him persevere, leading to academic excellence and plans “to implement the lessons I learned through adversity in order to contribute to the lives of patients.”
As he contemplates continued education following his undergraduate degree, Alejandro is looking at options for the MD route, tackling an MD/PHD, or industry or community health possibilities. But one thing is certain, “I wish to build a community centered around education and well-being so that my energy can be conveyed, as the saying goes, into ‘teaching a man how to fish.’”
