After experiencing poverty and abuse at a young age, serving others has brought comfort and fulfillment in Reagan’s life. Following her parents’ divorce, the John Muir College Public Health/Community Health Science major discovered reading and cheerleading as outlets and sources of support. She discovered the local library was within walking distance of the RV where she lived. “It quickly became my safe space where I began to develop my love for learning.”
In high school, Reagan discovered that Health was her favorite class. “I formed a close relationship with my teacher, who turned into one of my most important female role models. She comforted me and encouraged me to become involved in more extracurriculars. By junior year, I served as President of the Health Club and was very involved with Varsity Cheer.” She also realized her desire was to help others. Eager to gain experience, Reagan enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Phlebotomy class, earning both certifications at the age of sixteen. Reagan then volunteered at a local long-term care facility as a CNA. “I fell in love with the elderly residents. I learned the basics of caregiving while building intimate relationships with my patients. Even at that young age, I felt that I was able to make a true difference in these elderly patients’ lives.”
Upon entering UC San Diego, Reagan was offered a position with Scripps Hospitals, working 12-hour shifts at various hospitals alongside nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals. She has a strong interest in Public Service and while a student at UC San Diego has spent time as an advocate for foster children, volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic, working in the community as a CNA, and becoming a research assistant in the School of Public Health. “I hope to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant in low-income, rural areas like the one I grew up in.”
