Jonathan Soule

As a first-generation non-traditional college student, Jonathan wants to make his family proud. His original plan was to become a plumber and he apprenticed for three years before deciding to switch directions and return to school. “I knew I would have to fund myself through college, as my family lacked the monetary resources to assist this sudden shift to academia. At the time, I was excited, but also terrified. I lacked the confidence and perspective to understand my capabilities. I was willing to work hard, but I wondered if that would be enough.” He also needed to relearn some of the basics since graduating high school. Jonathan attended community college, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, which he maintained at UC San Diego where the Sixth College Biochemistry major made the Provost Honors list.

Jonathan finds that his interest in the gym has a deep connection to his passion for science. When he first started weightlifting about ten years ago, it was based on insecurity. “I felt that I needed to prove myself as a man, and the only way to do that was to become stronger. Now, for this single hour I can shut out the world, focus intently on a muscle group, and through conscious, controlled, calculated effort, I can elicit cellular growth.” He also uses this time to relax his mind. “This time brings me relief, joy, and a sense of accomplishment.”

Currently, Jonathan is setting his sights on an MD/PhD program. “I believe it will fully satiate my curiosity and passion for science.” He has signed up to become a volunteer with UC San Diego Health and also is hoping to participate in summer research internships.

As he looks to the future, Jonathan said, “I care deeply for people, and I believe the best way I can help is by healing them. Therefore, I believe becoming a physician-scientist is the ideal career for me.”
