Christopher chose UC San Diego with one specific goal: to be accepted into the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science – Masters of International Affairs program. He is achieving his goal as an Eleanor Roosevelt Political Science major. He began his college studies in Political Science at the National University in the Philippines before immigrating to the United States to pursue restarting his life. “I was an achiever ever since I was young. Yet, I lost myself somewhere along the way.” He learned that he had anxiety and depression and needed to reclaim his mental health.

Christopher’s interest in helping others in need began in high school where he was involved in a theater club as an actor and president of a Catholic organization that helped underserved children in his community. Both of these organizations embodied the concept of service and social change.

Moving to the U.S., he was overwhelmed with a more complex and diversified society and the plight of migrant communities, indigenous groups, and people of color. “The intersection of race, gender, and socio-economic status among everything else aggravates the social disadvantages suffered by these groups and elsewhere these issues are manifested in different forms. Therefore, I want to work and travel the world so I can immerse myself in different communities, and eventually become of service to them in whatever way I can.”

Given the international status of the U.S. as a global superpower, he considers the foreign service one of the most demanding yet fulfilling careers. It is why he set his sights on international affairs under political science as a field of interest. Christopher’s future plans include broadening his skill set by studying international law and eventually getting a Juris Doctor degree. “My career goal is to work either as a foreign service officer at the U.S. State Department or as a staff member at the United Nations.”
